This symposium is designed for physicians, registered nurses, social workers, respiratory therapists, and other allied health care professionals who care for potential DCD patients.  This one day meeting encompasses topics directly related to ventilated patients whom end-of-life care is being considered and organ donation is an option.  Participants will be able to describe how DCD is an additional element in end-of-life decisions, ethical implications, and apply learned skills to clinical practice to optimize the potential of organ donation.

Boot Camp in Evidence-Based Medicine

Participants will learn how to frame a PICO question and search the medical literature based on that question; how to critically appraise journal articles with various study designs (therapy, harm, diagnosis, prognosis, systematic review and meta-analysis); how clinical practice guidelines are developed using the GRADE method; and explore how to utilize the principles of evidence-based medicine in clinical practice, teaching, and research.

Enrollment will be limited to 30 participants, each of whom will receive a course syllabus plus a copy of the Users’ Guide to the Medical Literature, 3rd ed. as well as breakfast and lunch.
