Overview

The American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA®) has recognized the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences Simulation Center for Advanced Clinical Skills with its Simulation Education Network endorsement. With this endorsement, the simulation center joins an elite group of more than 47 centers 2 of 6 nationwide that hold this distinction. ASA® MOCA simulation courses are high-caliber, immersive educational experiences. Among anesthesiologists who attended MOCA simulation courses, 98% found the experience was relevant to their clinical practice, and 94% reported the experience was likely to promote change in their clinical practice (McIvoret al. 2012). ASA simulation courses provide anesthesiologists and their patients with a powerful advantage, as simulation education demonstrates a direct upgrade in patient safety and quality of care. Simulation education is an innovative training method where anesthesiologists problem-solve in a setting closely replicating actual clinical experience during surgery. Courses realistically recreate challenging anesthesia crisis resource management scenarios. Each participant serves as the primary anesthesiologist for a team-based scenario, a responder for others as well as an observer for some. Following each scenario, all participants engage in a facilitated, constructive conversation focused on practice improvement in the participants’ clinical setting. Additionally, the course off ers advanced skills labs. The Participant-Instructor ratio is typically concentrated at 5:2. You will not receive a grade. There is no test. No record is kept of the participants’ performance. The course is not pass/fail. What happens in the Simulation Center stays in the Simulation Center. The UAMS Simulation Center welcomes you to a supportive culture, in a safe, controlled learning environment. Upon completion of this educational activity, American Board of Anesthesiology diplomates will receive the required five years of MOCA Part 4 credit (25 points) as part of their current cycle. Diplomates who choose to do so in each 5-year cycle get all of the required 50 points per 10-year cycle.
