Overview

The Mad about Forensics Nursing Conference is a two-day event focused on learning, collaboration, and community impact. Sessions cover compassion fatigue, runaway and missing youth, hands-on skills, pediatric sexual assault, non-fatal strangulation, human trafficking, survivor perspectives, and the future of forensic nursing in Arkansas. All nurses are welcome to attend, gain practical skills, explore different areas of forensic nursing, and see how this work impacts patients and communities.

ANCC Credit Designation Statement

The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences designates this live activity for a maximum of 12 ANCC contact hours.  Nursing contact hours will be awarded for successful completion of program components based upon documented attendance and completion of evaluation materials.


Objectives
  1. Describe the emotional impact of forensic nursing and strategies to maintain compassion without burnout.
  2. Apply trauma-informed care principles to improve patient-centered forensic examinations.
  3. Identify key components of effective forensic evidence collection and preservation.
  4. Analyze trends in runaway and missing children cases to inform forensic nursing assessments.
  5. Demonstrate skills in forensic documentation and use of examination supplies during simulations.
  6. Recognize signs of human trafficking and appropriate forensic nursing interventions.
  7. Collaborate effectively with law enforcement and prosecutors in human trafficking investigations.
  8. Understand the unique considerations when conducting pediatric sexual assault exams.
  9. Screen for anoxic brain injury in non-fatal intimate partner strangulation cases.
  10. Utilize forensic nursing strategies to address the effects of domestic violence on children and families.
  11. Interpret forensic findings relevant to court testimony and legal proceedings.
  12. Develop effective communication skills for interdisciplinary collaboration in forensic cases.
  13. Demonstrate proficiency in expert testimony preparation and courtroom presentation.
  14. Apply current forensic technologies (e.g., digital photography, toxicology) in evidence collection.
  15. Implement best practices for maintaining chain-of-custody in forensic evidence management.
  16. Identify signs of secondary trauma in healthcare providers and strategies for self-care.
  17. Advocate for improvements in forensic nursing practice within healthcare institutions.
  18. Describe legal and regulatory updates impacting forensic nursing practice in Arkansas.
  19. Participate in case discussions to apply forensic knowledge to uncommon or complex cases.
  20. Develop strategies for ongoing professional development and interdisciplinary education in forensic nursing.
